that's a tough one. i'm a smoker. i've disallowed smoking in my house because my husband is a non-smoker. i tried to quit and i did for about a year then slowly went back to it. mood swings can be horrible especially when your life feels out of control.
when you're a smoker you know full well what you're doing. i try to be considerate of other people all the time so that i don't smoke in an unventilated room or in my car if there are other people around. especially children.
still, if someone expressed their concern for my smoking i'd tell them as nicely as i could to shove it. i've actually had to.
see, if i quit my mood swings would be intolerable so i know i would definitely need medication to help me quit. and i'm not talking about a nicotine patch because if that was all there was to it i would have already quit.
i think the easiest thing to do is tell your friend as politely as possible that you don't like the smoke or that it bothers your "allergies". this way maybe he'll be conscious of not smoking around you in the car or in unventilated areas.
